SUMMARY:Learn How to Trace Your Family History - Scottish Indexes Conference - 22 May 2021
DESCRIPTION:Learn How to Trace Your Family History – Scottish Indexes Conference – 22 May 2021 \nWhen the pandemic struck in 2020 and Scottish archives closed their doors\, Scottish based scottishindexes.com immediately started hosting free online conferences to teach people how to trace their Scottish family tree and provide much-needed interaction for people stuck at home. Regarding these conferences\, one attendee said\, “Thank you very much for another great conference. They really are a bright spot in these days\, weeks\, months spent at home.” The 10th conference in this series will be held on 22 May 2021 on Zoom and Facebook. \nDuring this 16-hour event\, we will hear from many experts\, including genealogist and author Chris Paton who will present\, ‘Genealogy Without Borders’. Genealogist Kate Keter will present\, ‘Mother dead\, Father in prison’\, which will tell how a single entry in a school admission register led to uncovering the stories of three generations of one family. Genealogist Andrew Armstrong will present\, ‘Patterns of Migration in the Scottish Textiles Industries 1750-1950’. \nFollowing the March 2021 Scottish Indexes Conference\, one attendee wrote\, “Congratulations and thanks for the great program today. The level of expertise and information is wonderful for those of us who have been active in genealogical research for many years.” \nTo register\, simply join the Scottish Indexes group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/groups/scottishindexes) or to register on Zoom follow the directions on www.scottishindexes.com.

SUMMARY:Harry Goodsir - A Family Skeleton
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Iain MacIntyre \nGoodsir\, whose family came from Largo & Anstruther\, was part of the Sir John Franklin Expedition which tried to find a way through the North West Passage in 1845-48\, and died with the rest of the men. There were two ships in the Expedition\, HMS Erebus & HMS Terror. Goodsir was Assistant Surgeon on the Erebus. The ships were stuck in the ice\, and both ships were abandoned in 1848\, as the men tried to walk to safety\, but they all died. \nAll contact with the two ships was then lost\, and it was not until 2014 that the wreck of the Erebus was found\, followed by the Terror 2 years later\, in 2016. Both ships were in a remarkable state of preservation\, and both were then 100 miles apart\, and it is believed that the Erebus moved with the floating ice to its present position. \nOn Saturday past there was a Documentary on Channel 4 regarding HMS Erebus\, “the Ghost ship of the Arctic;” while several years ago SKY brought out a mini-series called rather appropriately the Terror\, which features the crew of HMS Erebus\, with the names of the captain and crew being retained; but the Terror was a giant polar bear lurking in the bowels off the ship\, which killed off the crew one by one \nIt may be mentioned that the Surgeon on board the Terror also came from Fife – John Smart Peddie\, from Inverkeithing\, son of James Peddie\, architect

SUMMARY:"Hidden Burgh: restoring Cupar's place at the heart of Fife" HELP NEEDED
DESCRIPTION:The University of St Andrews are involved in the Archives Revealed project “Hidden Burgh: restoring Cupar’s place at the heart of Fife”.  It is being financed largely by the Archives Revealed funding programme from The National Archives and the Pilgrim Trust\, and will last for one year. The University holds the records for the Cupar Burgh from 1364 to 1975 and the objective is to have them fully catalogued so that they are accessible to everyone.  Part of the project involves engagement with the Cupar community\, giving the local people the opportunity to be part of the project.  With that in mind\, the University is looking for volunteers who are interested in being involved in some indexing/transcription projects.  It is anticipated that the volunteers will work in a group setting at the Cupar Library using copies of the original records. \n  \nIf you are interested in being part of this exciting venture\, please come along to a meeting at the Cupar Library (Room 14) on Friday 25th January at 2 pm.  The Cupar project archivist\, Christine Wood\, will explain what types of projects are available and what is involved.  Anyone who would like to learn more and is keen to take part will be warmly welcomed.  If you are not able to attend the meeting on the day but wish to be considered for the volunteering projects\, please contact Christine Wood at caw23@st-andrews.ac.uk or telephone 01334 461727/462339. \n
