The Fife Death Index was originally published and produced on CD by Fife Family History in 2000. It was later republished in 2004 to include information to 1877. The society no longer produce this information on CD but have made the information available free to members as a benefit. Subscribers to www.findmypast.com will also have access to these records through the Scottish family history record collection online.

Prior to 1855 there was no legal requirement to record births, marriages and deaths in Scotland, making this resource, which carries over 250,000 records an essential tool for anyone researching their Fife ancestry prior to statutory requirement.

This index to deaths recorded in Fife’s old parish records includes deaths and burials from St Andrews and Edinburgh Testaments (from 1549 to 1823), sheriff court wills (1824-1854), Fife newspapers (1822-1854), kirk session account books for mortcloths not included in the old parish records, lair registers held at the National Archives (Kirk Session Records), and other sources.
